Moving is stressful on its own; add small children to the mix, and you have one nerve-wracking experience. Although you cannot eliminate the stresses of moving, you can minimize them.

Here are four tips for making moving less stressful with kids in tow:

1. Don't Be Afraid to Ask for Help

Getting some help with your moving duties can make the experience much more pleasant. Enlist a friend or family member to help with packing. Send your child off with a trusted parent for a play date. You can even have your spouse take the kids for ice cream and trip the park.

When your children are gone—or busy with other tasks—begin working on the harder aspects of moving. You can sort items, pack the essentials, or start purging items you no longer need. Even if you only get a couple of hours without your children, you will get a lot done. After all, you won't be distracted or pre-occupied with your child's wants or needs.

3. Involve Your Kids

It may seem counterintuitive, but it's actually helpful to involve your kids in the moving process. While your packing away important items, have your kids go through their toys. Have them place unwanted toys in a box that you can donate or sell later.

You can also have your children pack away their own items, such as clothing and bedding. Give them a box and let them pack. You may have to re-pack their boxes later, but it won't take up too much time. Involving your children in the packing process helps them feel like they are part of the move. It also keeps them busy.

4. Purge the Old

Go through your house and collect items you no longer want, need, or wear. Set these items aside and collect them later to donate or sell. If you plan to donate, place like items together in a large garbage bag or extra boxes.

You can also go through children's items, but do so when they are asleep. This way they won't notice something is missing when they are up and about. Just be sure to only get rid of things they no longer wear, use, or play with.

Moving is a stressful event in anyone's life. But it's even more stressful if you have children. Use these tips, along with a professional moving company like Arrow Moving & Storage Co. Inc., to make moving easier on everyone.
